    The Art of the Grain

    By Xact Construction Team

In a world of engineered surfaces and synthetic finishes, there's something irreplaceable about real wood. Not just the look of it — you can fake that with a good veneer printer — but the feel. The way light plays across a hand-planed surface. The subtle warmth under your fingertips.

At Palm Beach Fabricators, our millwork studio, we spend more time selecting and orienting wood grain than most shops spend on entire projects. It's not obsessive — it's essential. The grain direction of a cabinet door affects how it catches light, how it ages, even how it sounds when you close it.

Consider a walnut library where every panel must be grain-matched across a 20-foot wall. Making a pattern like that work means sorting through hundreds of board feet of lumber, then selecting and sequencing each piece by hand.

The finished wall looks like a single, impossibly large piece of wood. Most visitors don't notice the craftsmanship — they just feel that something about the room is right. That invisible quality is what we chase in every piece we build.
